In 2005, Greg Howard a touring guitar tech for high profile artists such as Jimmy Page, The Black Crowes and Green Day joined the crew with Aerosmith and immediately hit it off with guitarist Brad Whitford over their mutual love of high quality gear. Over the following years and during further touring and recording, Brad encouraged Greg to follow his dream of designing and building his own guitar amplifiers. So, with a little help from good friend Ossie Ahsen (of Blockhead amps) Greg's dream of creating his own amps was finally realised in 2007 with the birth of their brand new company, Three Monkeys.
Here at 555 we love the Grease Monkey head and 2-12 Cab and you will too. Drop in late on Saturday afternoons and you'll find Kev blasting it out with his Z.Vex Woolly Mammoth pedal. But don't be fooled by his fuzz jams, the shimmering clean tones on this amp will melt even the coldest of hearts. But what's really so unique about the Grease Monkey is the rotary voice switch that interacts with the volume control allowing the player to alter both the gain structure and the tone and creating a more versatile and personalised sound. The Grease Monkey amplifier is designed for higher gain, and is built for players who want an aggressive sound while retaining dynamic range and extreme touch sensitivity. It is a 30-watt amplifier with four EL84 tubes in the power section and three 12AX7 tubes for the preamp. It is hand-built, with custom-wound transformers and hand-wired military-spec components. It also has selectable preamp gain response, which is a signature feature that allows for high or low gain settings at the flip of a switch. It is a non-master volume amp with zero negative feedback.
